YSU Nonprofit Leadership students consult for Children's Museum of Cleveland

A group of 10 Youngstown State University students in the Center for Nonprofit Leadership recently participated in a full-day immersive consulting project with the Children's Museum of Cleveland. The students identified solutions to organizational challenges facing the museum, including strategic planning, member to donor conversion and social media. Students participating in the project were Kate Landry, Amanda Paynter, Briana McGuire, Shannon Arnim, Cliff Hill, Morgan Conley, Kelly Hyden, Khiana Jeanniton, Alyssa Lutker and Leah Tekac.

YSU students participate in regional Ethics Bowl competition

Youngstown State University participated in the Central States Regional Ethics Bowl competition. YSU students forming the first team, which won the regional competition, are Samantha Fritz, Jacob Tomory, Moataz Abdelrasoul, Eva Lamberson and Michael Factor. The second team consisted of Dorcas Gitimu, Jared Cross and Albert Chizmar. Coaches are Alan Tomhave, associate professor and chair of the YSU Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Mark Vopat, professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies.

For YSU's Ford Theater, Life is a Cabaret!

Youngstown State University Theatre's production "Cabaret," the Tony- and Oscar-winning musical that explores the dark and tumultuous times of pre-World War II Germany, opens Friday, Nov. 15, in Ford Theater, Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. The show, directed by Matthew Mazuroski, a faculty member in YSU's Department of Theatre & Dance, runs two weekends, Nov. 15-17 and 22-24, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee performance at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16. Special rate tickets are: $8 for non-YSU students, YSU faculty and staff with valid ID, YSU alumni, senior citizens, Penguin Club members and groups of eight or more. Egyptian student first ever at YSU as Fulbright Scholar

YSU welcomes Fulbright Scholar, Dina Abdo, a citizen of Egypt who is pursuing a masters's degree in Financial Economics. Abdo, who earned a bachelor's degree at Nile University in Cairo, is believed to be the first student ever to study at YSU under the prestigious international scholarship program. The Fulbright Program, started in 1946 and named after U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright, operates in more than 160 countries and annually awards about 8,000 grants. In Egypt, the program offers scholarships to qualified graduate students to study at the graduate level in the United States.

YSU Honors College students participate in Global Day of Service

First-year students in the Honors College at Youngstown State University collectively contributed nearly 1,000 hours of service to the community as part of Global Day of Service, held earlier this semester. Students volunteered at 15 sites throughout Mahoning County, ranging from Gleaners Food Bank, Mill Creek Metro Parks and the Dorothy Day House to Habitat for Humanity, the OH WOW children's center and the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. The work included making cards with older adults, gardening and even working with St. Angela Merici Parish in Youngstown to pull debris out of a ravine in Lincoln Park and recovering nearly 250 discarded tires. The event is designed to not only make an impact in the community but also formally start the students' volunteer experience, part of the honors college curriculum.

YSU Awards First-Year Student Scholarships

Youngstown State University has recognized 249 first-year students with Martin Luther King Merit Awards and/or Trailblazer Scholarships. The MLK Merit Award is a $1,000 merit-based award for new graduates of local inner-city high schools, and the Trailblazer Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship for freshmen that aims to encourage outstanding students from diverse backgrounds.

Youngstown State University has awarded Undergraduate International Scholarships to 28 students new to the YSU campus this fall. The scholarships are renewable and range from $1,000 to $7,000.

YSU Honors College launches "Student of the Week" initiative

The Honors College at Youngstown State University has launched a new initiative to recognize academic excellence, community engagement and student success. Each week, the college names an "Honors Student of the Week" as a way to share stories about student achievements. The Honors Student of the Week is announced each Sunday in the college's weekly e-newsletter sent to Honors College students, staff and faculty and also posted on the YSU website. There are currently 1,266 students in the college.

Four Business students named Beeghly Fellows

Youngstown State University students Jenna Binsley, Alanis Chew, Richard Fisher and Ryan Sheffield, have been selected as the John D. Beeghly Fellows in the YSU Williamson College of Business Administration for the 2019 Fall Semester. The program, made possible by an endowment established at the YSU Foundation by Beeghly's wife and children, provides students with a paid fellowship working with the Ohio Small Business Development Center at YSU. Projects include marketing research, preparation of financial statements, export readiness studies, country research, business plan development, cash flow analysis, and sales forecast.

YSU radio show presents "Ghastly Ghost Stories"

YSU students perform in "Haunted Youngstown-Ghastly Ghost Stories," during the next Good Humor Radio Hour. The show runs 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Butler Institute of American Art-North. Tickets are free but must be secured in advance by calling the University Theatre Box Office at 330-941-3105.

Five men and five women have been named to YSU's 2019 Homecoming court. This year's King and Queen will be crowned during halftime ceremonies of the football game with South Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 12. This year's theme is "All the Penguins" to commemorate the 79th Homecoming celebration.

Students selected for international X-Culture event

Five students in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University were among a select group of young people from throughout the world chosen to attend the week-long X-Culture Symposium at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Seniors Matthew A. Steer, Alanis Chew, John P. Rembis, Mason Scovil and Stephanie Virgallito were among 150 students chosen out of 5,000 eligible students from 40 countries to go to the conference this past summer.

Youngstown State University launches a new online student-run news program called Jambar TV, which airs weekly on YouTube. The same editorial staff that publishes The Jambar, YSU's award-winning student newspaper, and thejambar.com will produce Jambar TV.

YSU sweeps top awards at additive manufacturing conference

A student, a faculty member and an alumnae of Youngstown State University swept the awards at the annual conference of the Ohio Additive Manufacturing Cluster in Cleveland. The cluster is a partnership between the Youngstown Business Incubator, Team NEO, MAGNET, JobsOhio and America Makes, with the goal of accelerating the adoption of 3D printing in Ohio. The awards ceremony, attended by more than 200 people, spotlighted individuals contributing to the advancement and use of additive manufacturing in Ohio.

Civil Engineering students take top prize

A team of Youngstown State University Civil Engineering students won the 2019 Student Design Competition of the Northeast Section of the Ohio Water Environment Association. The team will move on to the Water Environment Federation's Student Design Competition at the WEF Technical Exhibition and Conference in September in Chicago.

YSU students study abroad in China

Ten YSU students and two faculty members from the Department of Psychology completed a two week study abroad trip in China in May and learned alongside ten Chinese students from Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Together, the students read and discussed literature from Psychology and Education. Students and faculty also experienced American and Chinese music, food and other cultural components.

Three YSU students spent part of their summer in Taichung, Taiwan, taking part in a professional and technical writing internship with Providence University. Angela Lock, Courtney Lundgren and Mallory Rader improved their communication skills across international barriers throughout three weeks of cultural field trips, educational meetings and more.

YSU student media dominates national awards

Youngstown State University's student media dominated the Society for Collegiate Journalist's annual student media awards competition. The Jambar, YSU's student newspaper, placed first in Newspaper Overall Excellence, the second prominent recognition for The Jambar this year. In February, The Jambar was named top student newspaper in Ohio by the Ohio News Media Association. Also taking home SCJ awards were YO Magazine, second place for overall excellence in the Magazine General Interest category, and Rookery Radio, third place for overall excellence in Internet Radio. Several students also won individual awards.
