Three-Minute Thesis, presented by the YSU College of Graduate Studies, requires students to explain their research in three minutes in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

Jason Hess, a Mechanical Engineering major and member of the Sokolov Honors College from West Middlesex, Pennsylvania is Youngstown State University's first-ever recipient of the prestigious Truman Scholarship. Hess was announced as a 2023 Truman Scholar by the Board of Trustees of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. The Truman Scholarship is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States. "Jason perfectly exemplifies the outstanding leadership potential, commitment to a career in public service, and academic excellence the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation is looking for when naming their scholars," said Helen K. Lafferty, interim president of YSU. "This is a well-deserved honor and we celebrate Jason's hard work in the classroom and his dedication to make an impact in his community."

The Clarence P. Gould Honor Society of Youngstown State University has inducted 40 juniors and seniors into its 63rd cohort. Inductees were evaluated for academic excellence as well as depth and breadth of study. New members are elected from the top students choosing a curriculum founded in the liberal arts and sciences from the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Lynne Azar of Poland, Ohio, a master's degree student in the Gerontology program at Youngstown State University, is among only 10 students statewide named to the Ohio Scholars in Aging Class of 2020. The program, a partnership of the Ohio Department on Aging and the Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education, allows students to network with lawmakers, state officials and others and to learn about the state's policymaking process. Since 2013, more than 100 students from 15 colleges and universities have been selected for the program.

YSU STEM College has named Kalliope Zembillas, a senior Chemical Engineering major with a minor in Mathematics, the STEM Intern of the Year. The honor is given to a student who has shown a high quality of work, has demonstrated initiative, has completed presentations and has had impacted the company with whom they have worked. Kalliope's internship was at the Simon Roofing Research and Development Lab, starting in the Spring semester 2019. Her main responsibility was the formulating and testing of water-based roofing coatings. Other responsibilities included developing new testing methods, streamlining old ones, and data collection and analysis.

YSU welcomes Fulbright Scholar, Dina Abdo, a citizen of Egypt who is pursuing a masters's degree in Financial Economics. Abdo, who earned a bachelor's degree at Nile University in Cairo, is believed to be the first student ever to study at YSU under the prestigious international scholarship program. The Fulbright Program, started in 1946 and named after U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright, operates in more than 160 countries and annually awards about 8,000 grants. In Egypt, the program offers scholarships to qualified graduate students to study at the graduate level in the United States.

Youngstown State University undergraduate students Jared Vanasdale and John Berndt received the Best Seminar Presentation Award at the 10th annual Midwest Graduate Research Symposium. Berndt and Vanasdale placed first among more than 120 presentations from students, mostly master's and PhD graduate students, at universities across the Midwest.

Jenna Wise, who graduates at Youngstown State University's Spring Commencement on Saturday, has been awarded a prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation that will finance her PhD studies at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh starting this fall.

A team of three Youngstown State University students have won a Meritorious award in the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling, placing the students in the top 8 percent of more than 25,000 participating teams worldwide. Three other YSU teams received Honorable Mention honors.
