Big Blitz, a YSU student trio that performs dance and groove-based music, are among the featured guests at YSU's Dana School of Music's Saxophone Day and Jazz Day Saturday, March 19, in Bliss Hall, on campus.

"In the jazz combo program we explore the relationship between improvisation and composition. Each generation of jazz musicians develops their own unique take on the music. It's exciting to hear the fresh voices of these young musicians emerge."

"I am happy to share this bit of Golden Age musical theatre with our own greater Youngstown community as we endeavor to bring The Music Man's cast album to life on the Ford Theater stage," said Maria Fenty Denison, YSU lecturer and coordinator of University Theatre. "Our concert version has retained a bit of plot, some staging and a few dashes of choreography just to spice things up."

The YSU campus comes alive with the sounds of music this weekend as students in the Dana School of Music present three free outdoor performances.

"Now You See Us: An Evening of Virtual Dance," University Theatre's first show of Spring semester, opens Thursday, March 25 with additional shows Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27.

Scenes from a dozen of Shakespeare's most popular plays will be performed as Youngstown State University Theatre presents "An Evening with Billy Shakes." The virtual production, directed by Matthew Mazuroski, associate professor of Visual and Dramatic Arts, is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday April 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18, with performances 7:30 p.m. each day and 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays.

University Theatre opens its second show of the season this week. "Elegies: A Song Cycle," will be presented virtually at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday Nov. 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as 2 p.m. matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday Nov. 14, 15...

Original works by 10 student choreographers were performed as part of the Youngstown State University Dance Ensemble concert in February. An additional company of students also had an opportunity to dance in the show. The performance was under the artistic direction of Theatre and Dance faculty member Amy A. Wright. Guest choreographer was Stephanie Frey Anderson, a professional dance artist in the Pittsburgh area and a resident artist at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center.

The work of Youngstown State University Art students is featured in two new exhibits at the McDonough Museum of Art on campus. The Fall Graduating BFA Exhibition and the MFA First Year and Collaborative Project Exhibition are on view in the McDonough galleries through Dec. 14.

Work is underway on the Andrews Avenue Memory Mural Project, under the direction of YSU Art Professor Dragana Crnjak and students in her special topics class on Creating Public Art.

Youngstown State University Theatre's production "Cabaret," the Tony- and Oscar-winning musical that explores the dark and tumultuous times of pre-World War II Germany, opens Friday, Nov. 15, in Ford Theater, Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. The show, directed by Matthew Mazuroski, a faculty member in YSU's Department of Theatre & Dance, runs two weekends, Nov. 15-17 and 22-24, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee performance at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16. YSU students perform in "Haunted Youngstown-Ghastly Ghost Stories," during the next Good Humor Radio Hour. The show runs 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Butler Institute of American Art-North. YSU students perform music from Les Miserables, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera and several other top Broadway musicals at the Department of Theatre and Dance's "The Heavy Hitters Cabaret" this evening, Oct. 18, in the Eleanor Beech Flad Pavilion at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown.

Youngstown State University launches a new online student-run news program called Jambar TV, which airs weekly on YouTube. The same editorial staff that publishes The Jambar, YSU's award-winning student newspaper, and thejambar.com will produce Jambar TV.

Artwork from graduating students in Youngstown State University's Department of Art is featured at two exhibits opening this month at the McDonough Museum of Art on campus. The Spring Graduating BFA Exhibit and the MFA Thesis Exhibit run April 26 through May 11, with a public opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. April 26 at the museum.
