Youngstown State University is a comprehensive urban research university that offers over 11,500 students more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. As a major educational and economic development resource in the region, YSU is known for its focus on academic research and creative programs that transform its students into successful professionals, scholars and leaders.

Student earns ADDY Award for video cinematography

Mario Ricciardi of Boardman, an Advertising and Public Relations major at Youngstown State University, received a Student Silver ADDY Award for video cinematography at the Akron ADDY Awards. The annual awards program recognizes creative excellence in locally-created advertising. Ricciardi's submission was a music video created for Dahnji, a local music artist, to accompany the release of the artist's latest album.

YSU team takes top spot in casting competition

A team of Youngstown State University students placed first at the 2019 American Foundry Society Southeast Regional Casting Competition in Savannah, Ga. The students designed an original 14-inch aluminum alloy wheel, conducted stress and casting simulations in labs at YSU, had the mold printed on YSU's 3D sand printer at Humtown Products in Leetonia, poured it at YSU's foundry in Bliss Hall and submitted it in the competition. Submissions were judged on complexity/difficulty, match to submitted design, casting quality and originality.

Williamson College names three Beeghly Fellows

Richard Fisher, Gryphon Johnson and Maria Vince, students in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University, have been selected as John D. Beeghly Fellows for the 2019 Spring Semester. The Beeghly Fellows program provides students with paid fellowships working with the Ohio Small Business Development Center at YSU.

Students perform in YSU Dance Ensemble concert

Students performed original choreography as part of Youngstown State University's Dance Ensemble Feb. 28, March 1 and 2, in the Ford Theater of Bliss Hall on campus. The concert featured a total of 30 student dancers performing a variety of jazz, tap, modern and dance theatre.

Business students compete at Ohio HR Games

YSU students in the Williamson College of Business Administration finished first in sportsmanship and collegiality at the Ohio HR Games at Ashland University. The games were a Jeopardy-style competition where teams had the opportunity to test their Human Resource knowledge against students from other universities in Ohio. The YSU team placed third overall.

YSU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma inducts new members

The Youngstown State University Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, hosted by the Williamson College of Business Administration, installed 55 business students during induction ceremonies on campus. Beta Gamma Sigma is the world's premier business honorary reserved exclusively for schools accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Only the top 10 percent of sophomore, junior, or senior business majors or the top 20 percent of the master's students are eligible for membership. The ceremony marked the 19th induction class at YSU. The Williamson College has now inducted 816 students.

YSU names Three-Minute Thesis winners

Alexander Huber, a Biological Sciences student at Youngstown State University, placed first in the recent Three-Minute Thesis competition on campus. Huber's researched is titled "Purification of Phage-Displayed HSA-Specific Peptide for Biosensor Production," and his faculty advisor is Diana Fagan, professor of Biological Sciences. Huber also received the People's Choice award. Placing second in the competition was Astha Syal, Computing and Information Systems. Syal's research is "Network Data Analysis to predict volume of Future Network Traffic," and her faculty advisor is Alina Lazar, professor, Computer Science and Information Systems. Three-Minute Thesis, presented by the YSU College of Graduate Studies, requires students to explain their research in three minutes in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

YSU Ethics Bowl team competes at national championships

The YSU Ethics Bowl team placed fifth at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl National Championships. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Ethics Bowl team competed at nationals after again placing first in the regional competition. There were 36 teams at the national competition.

YSU DPT students attend nation's largest Physical Therapy conference

Nearly 40 Youngstown State University Doctor of Physical Therapy students attended the American Physical Therapy Association's Combined Sections Meeting in Washington D.C. last month. The event is the nation's largest physical therapy conference with more than 13,000 therapists in attendance. Students participated in several educational sessions and poster presentations in the specialty areas of Sports, Orthopedics, Neurology, Geriatrics, Health Policy, Pediatrics, Cardiopulmonary, Acute Care, Women's and Men's Health, Electrophysiology and Research.

Penquin Equestrian team headed to national semifinals

The Youngstown State University Western Equestrian team has qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association Western Semifinals, March 16 and 17, at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The top four individuals and top three teams will advance to the National Championships May 2-5 in Syracuse, N.Y.
